Pick the right vehicle for cruise luggage
Cruise passengers pack more than airline passengers, especially for two weeks with formal nights. A saloon takes three large cases, which is tight for two people on a long cruise once hand luggage is added. For a couple with two big cases each, book an estate or people carrier. Families or two couples sharing should book the people carrier: six seats and five large cases for £149, about £37 per person between four.
Southampton’s five cruise terminals
Southampton has five cruise terminals spread along the Eastern and Western Docks: Ocean, QEII, City, Mayflower and Horizon. They are not in one building, so the terminal on your cruise documents matters. Ships change berth from season to season, so check your documents rather than going by the cruise line. Flying in on the day you sail
Many cruisers arrive at Heathrow on the morning of embarkation. It can work, but plan it carefully:
- Allow for Heathrow. Immigration and bags can take anything from 30 minutes to over an hour.
- Allow for the M25 and M3. The drive is usually 75 to 90 minutes, longer on Friday afternoons, Saturdays in summer and bank holidays.
- Check your boarding window. Most lines give you a check-in time slot and an all-aboard time, often around two hours before sailing.
- Leave a buffer. A flight landing at least six hours before all-aboard is a sensible minimum. If your flight is long-haul or lands late morning, consider a hotel night in Southampton.
