Route and Journey Time
From Oxford the driver takes the A34 south past Abingdon, Didcot and Newbury, joins the M3 near Winchester and then the M27 for the last few miles into the docks. It is about 70 miles and normally takes 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. The A34 is a busy freight route and can be slow around Newbury at peak times, so we add a margin for weekday mornings.
Taxi or Train from Oxford?
CrossCountry runs direct trains from Oxford to Southampton Central, taking roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, and you then need a taxi to the docks. It is quick, but carrying large cruise cases on a busy intercity train and then queuing for a taxi at Southampton Central is a lot of effort. For two or more travellers, the fixed car fare is often close to the cost of tickets plus the taxi from the station.
Pickups Across Oxfordshire
We collect from Oxford and the surrounding towns and villages, including Abingdon, Didcot, Wantage, Witney, Kidlington, Bicester and Thame. Towns south of Oxford such as Abingdon and Didcot are a little closer to Southampton, so their fares are usually slightly lower. Your exact price appears when you enter your address in our booking form.
Should You Drive and Park Instead?
Port parking is charged for every day of the cruise, so on a longer sailing it adds up quickly. With a pre-booked car from Oxford there is no parking bill, no fuel and no need for anyone to drive the long way home after disembarking. Some passengers on very short sailings still prefer to park, so check the parking cost for your dates and compare it with our fixed fare.
Timing Your Arrival at the Port
Every sailing has staggered check-in times, and yours is on your boarding paperwork. Aim to reach the terminal a little before that time rather than first thing in the morning. We work back from your slot, add a safety margin for the motorways, and confirm the pickup time with you before the day.
Luggage is simple: porters at the terminal take your large cases from the car and they are delivered to your cabin. Keep your passport, medication and valuables in your hand luggage.
Which Southampton Terminal?
Southampton has five cruise terminals. Ocean and QEII are in the Eastern Docks, and City, Mayflower and Horizon are in the Western Docks. Your ship’s terminal is on your booking; tell us when you book and the driver goes straight there. Our Southampton cruise terminals guide explains each one.
Car or Minibus from Oxford?
For one or two travellers a saloon is enough. Four people with full-size cases are better in an estate. University groups, reunion parties and extended families sailing from Oxford often fill a people carrier or 8-seater, and larger groups can travel together in a 16-seater minibus with room for everyone’s luggage.
