Route and Journey Time

The usual route leaves Bristol on the A4 towards Bath, then follows the A36 through Warminster and Salisbury before joining the M27 near Southampton. Some drivers prefer the M4 east and then the A34 and M3, which is longer in miles but can be quicker when the A36 is busy. Either way, expect around 2 hours to 2 hours 20 minutes in normal traffic for about 100 to 110 miles. Summer Saturdays, when many ships turn around, are the busiest days on both routes.

Taxi or Train from Bristol?

Great Western Railway runs direct trains from Bristol Temple Meads to Southampton Central via Bath and Salisbury, taking about 1 hour 50 minutes. From there you need a taxi to the docks. It suits a solo traveller with a small case. For couples and families with large cruise luggage, carrying cases on and off the train and queuing for a second taxi makes the day harder, and the shared car fare is often similar in cost.

Collecting from Bath and North Somerset

Many passengers sailing from Southampton live outside Bristol itself. We collect from Bath, Keynsham, Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea, Weston-super-Mare and the villages around them. Bath is slightly closer to Southampton on the A36, so fares from there are usually a little lower than from north Bristol. Enter your postcode in the booking form to see your exact price.

Taxi or Park at the Port?

Driving yourself means paying for cruise parking for the whole length of the trip, on top of fuel, and then driving home tired on disembarkation day. A transfer from Bristol avoids both. Nobody has to drive after a week or two at sea, and you are dropped at the terminal door rather than at a car park shuttle stop. For short cruises, parking can work out cheaper, so it is worth comparing your own dates.

When to Leave Bristol on Sailing Day

Check the arrival time printed on your cruise documents. Lines allocate check-in slots so that passengers do not all arrive at once, and turning up hours early rarely gets you on board sooner. We plan the pickup so you reach the terminal shortly before your slot, with a buffer for roadworks or holiday traffic.

When you arrive, your driver pulls into the drop-off area and porters collect the big cases for delivery to your cabin. You walk into the terminal with your hand luggage and travel documents only.

Getting to the Right Terminal

There are five cruise terminals at Southampton: Ocean and QEII in the Eastern Docks, and City, Mayflower and Horizon in the Western Docks. Your cruise line confirms which one your ship uses. Pass that on when you book and we will drop you at the right door. See our Southampton cruise terminals guide for maps and details.

Picking the Right Car from Bristol

Two people with a large case each fit a saloon. If you also have formal wear or a folding wheelchair, an estate gives four people room for four cases. Families from Bristol and Bath often book a people carrier for six, and friends sailing together can share an executive minivan or the 12-seater cruise minibus.

Pickup Areas Around Bristol

Pickups cover all of Bristol, including Clifton, Redland, Bishopston, Southville, Stoke Bishop and the city centre hotels, plus Filton, Bradley Stoke, Thornbury, Yate, Keynsham and Bath. Prices vary slightly by postcode.

Coming Home

On the way back, your driver waits outside the terminal as you leave the ship and takes you home to Bristol, Bath or North Somerset. For all routes to and from the port, see our main Southampton cruise terminal taxi page, and compare fares on our Southampton cruise port taxi prices page.

Cruise Transfers From Other Areas

We also run fixed-price transfers to the Southampton cruise terminals from Birmingham, Oxford, Reading, Brighton and Chichester. After your cruise, see our transfers from the Southampton cruise terminal to Heathrow and to Gatwick.
