A taxi from Luton Airport to Southampton’s Ocean or QEII cruise terminal costs £147.57 in a saloon with Onward Travel Solutions, or £151.48 to the City, Horizon and Mayflower terminals. Three passengers, three large cases, the same fixed price on the way back, paid to the driver on the day.
Luton is north of London, but the drive to Southampton doesn’t need to go near the centre: the M1 links straight onto the M25 and round to the M3. At roughly 95 miles it’s a shorter run than from Stansted, and a common choice for cruise passengers flying in from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Europe.

The Drive
Your driver takes the M1 south to the M25, then anticlockwise past Heathrow to the M3 and down to Southampton. It’s about 95 miles and usually around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Traffic around the M25 near Heathrow is the main variable, so allow extra time on a weekday or a busy summer embarkation day.
Taxi or Train?
By rail you’d take the shuttle to Luton Airport Parkway, a Thameslink train into London, a change across to Waterloo and a South Western Railway train to Southampton Central, then a taxi to the docks. It’s around 2 hours 30 minutes before that last leg. The coach via Heathrow is cheaper but takes over three hours.
Southampton’s Cruise Terminals
Southampton has five cruise terminals in two separate dock areas, and the fare depends on which one you’re sailing from. Ocean and QEII are in the Eastern Docks through Dock Gate 4; City, Horizon and Mayflower are in the Western Docks through Dock Gate 10. Ships sometimes move terminal at short notice, so check your cruise documents and tell us the terminal when you book.
Our Southampton cruise terminals guide explains which lines usually use which terminal.
Pickup at Luton
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall. Give us your flight number and we’ll track it, with one hour of free waiting from the time you land.
Planning Your Day: Luton to the Ship
Luton handles plenty of early flights from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Europe, which fit well with a Southampton embarkation. Your cruise line will give you a terminal arrival window; work back from the end of it, allowing around two hours on the road plus a buffer for the M25 near Heathrow. A typical plan for a flight landing at 9:00am:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 9:00 | Flight lands at Luton |
| 9:00 to 9:40 | Passport control if arriving from abroad, then baggage reclaim |
| 9:40 | Meet your driver in arrivals |
| 9:40 to 11:45 | M1, M25 and M3 to Southampton |
| Around 11:45 | Arrive at your terminal |
For a flight landing after about midday, a same-day connection becomes tight, especially on a summer Saturday when several ships turn round at once and the M3 and the dock approaches get busy. In that case, fly in the day before and stay in Southampton or near Luton.
Coming Home: Ship to Luton
Ships arrive in Southampton early on the final morning, and guests leave in groups over the next few hours. Give us your ship and allocated disembarkation time when you book, and your driver will be there as you come out. With a drive of about two hours, a flight from Luton from early to mid-afternoon onwards is a sensible choice.
Which Vehicle for Cruise Luggage?
- Couple with two large cases: saloon, £147.57 to Ocean or QEII.
- Couple with extra cases or a folding wheelchair: estate.
- Family or group of six: people carrier at £198.35, which is £33.06 each.
- Up to eight people: 8-seater minivan at £219.83, or £27.48 each.
- Larger groups: 12- and 16-seat minibuses for families and clubs sailing together.
Cruise cases are often bigger than normal holiday luggage, so if your party is close to the limit, choose the next size up.
Is the Taxi Worth It From Luton?
For one person, the coach via Heathrow is the cheapest option, but it takes over three hours. The train needs a shuttle bus, Thameslink, a cross-London change to Waterloo and a South Western Railway train, followed by a taxi to the dock. For a family of four, the estate works out at £42.26 each and takes you straight to the terminal door with your cases.
Travelling With Children or Reduced Mobility
Add child seats in the booking form and give the ages so the right seats are fitted. Mention folding wheelchairs, scooters or walking aids in the notes; the estate and people carrier have the space, and your driver will help with loading.
Staying Overnight Before Your Cruise
If you’d rather not risk a same-day connection, book an OTS Taxi from Luton to a Southampton hotel the evening before, and a short transfer to the ship in the morning. Give the hotel as your drop-off address and the price is calculated the same way.
Why Book With Onward Travel Solutions?
A fixed fare agreed in advance, flight tracking with an hour’s free waiting, the right terminal and dock gate on the booking, and an OTS team who’ll update the drop-off if your ship changes terminal. You pay the driver on the day.
Arriving at Luton Airport
Luton has a single terminal, and your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall once you’ve collected your bags. Call them on the number in your booking confirmation as you come through and they’ll come straight to you. If you’d like a name board, add a note to the booking. Your driver will already know which Southampton terminal you’re heading for, because it’s on the booking.
If your inbound flight is delayed, your pickup moves with it automatically, and the first hour after landing is free. If a long delay puts your check-in at risk, call the OTS team and let your cruise line know as well.
Paying and Changing Your Booking
Nothing is paid online. The fare is fixed when you book and you pay the driver on the day. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup through Manage My Booking; inside 24 hours, call the OTS team. Child seats and extra stops can be added in the booking form.
