An honest comparison with the train

Gatwick to East Croydon is a busy rail route with frequent direct trains. For one person with a small bag going near the station, the train is cheaper than any taxi, and we would not pretend otherwise.

The taxi pays its way when the journey does not end at East Croydon:

Situation Why the car helps
Family of four with holiday luggage Estate is £79, under £20 each, door to door
Home in Coulsdon, Sanderstead or Selsdon No second leg by bus or tram from the station
Landing after 11pm Fixed fare, driver already following your flight
Six travelling together People carrier is £91, about £15 each

Which car?

The saloon carries three people and three suitcases. For four people with a case each, book the estate. The 8-seater (£118) has room for eight cases, which is useful for two families sharing a car or a group with sports equipment.

Meeting your driver

Your driver waits for you inside the arrivals hall at the North or South Terminal, holding a name board. We follow your flight number, and you have one hour of free waiting after the flight lands. Our flight delays and waiting time page explains what happens if the delay runs longer.

You can check your flight and terminal on Gatwick’s official flight information page.

Arriving at the North or South Terminal

Our fare is the same from both terminals. British Airways, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Jet2 arrive at the South Terminal; Emirates, Qatar Airways and other long-haul airlines at the North Terminal; easyJet at both. If you are unsure, your booking confirmation says which. The free inter-terminal shuttle takes about two minutes if you need to switch.

The drive north

The route follows the M23 and A23 north through Coulsdon and Purley into Croydon. The A23 through Purley can be slow at rush hour, which is one reason a fixed fare matters: you pay the same whatever the traffic.

Going back to Gatwick

The outbound trip is the same fixed fare. Your driver waits 10 minutes free at the door, so have bags ready. For a flight before 7am, the roads are clear and you can cut the buffer; for a Friday afternoon departure, allow extra time on the A23.
