Cruise terminal or ferry port?
Dover has two separate passenger areas, about a mile and a half apart, so tell us which you need:
- Dover Cruise Terminal (Western Docks). Two terminals: Cruise Terminal 1 in the old Dover Marine station building and the newer Cruise Terminal 2. Lines sailing from Dover include Fred. Olsen, Holland America, Celebrity, Viking, Ponant and HX. Your cruise documents give the terminal.
- Eastern Docks. The ferry port for Calais and Dunkirk. Most sailings carry vehicles only, and foot-passenger places are limited. Before booking a taxi to catch a ferry on foot, check with your ferry operator that your sailing accepts foot passengers and when check-in closes (usually 90 minutes before departure for foot passengers).
Why take a taxi from London to Dover?
The high-speed train from St Pancras reaches Dover Priory in just over an hour, but the station is not at the cruise terminal, so you still need a local taxi with all your cases. For cruise passengers with a week or two of luggage, or a group of four to six, a car door to door is simpler. Split four ways, a people carrier from Westminster is about £52 each.

When to leave London
Cruise lines give each cabin a check-in slot, usually from late morning. Aim to arrive inside your slot, not hours early. Allow 2 hours for the drive from central London, plus 30 to 60 minutes extra on Friday afternoons, summer Saturdays and bank holidays, when the M20 and A2 are busiest. If Operation Brock is in place on the M20 during cross-Channel disruption, the driver may use the A2 instead.
