Tunbridge Wells to Dover port taxi: ferry or cruise?

The Port of Dover has two main passenger areas. Foot passengers on the cross-Channel ferries to Calais and Dunkirk check in at the Eastern Docks, at the far end of the seafront. Cruise passengers use the Dover Cruise Terminals at the Western Docks, by the old Marine station. They are a couple of miles apart through the town. Tell us whether you are sailing on a ferry or a cruise, and the operator, and we will take you to the right door. For timetables and terminal information, see the Port of Dover website.

The route through Kent

From Tunbridge Wells the driver usually takes the A21 north and the A26 or the A228 across to the M20 near Maidstone, then the M20 and A20 to Dover. Tonbridge and Sevenoaks join the M20 more directly. The M20 is generally quick, but when Channel crossings are disrupted, Operation Brock or queues for the port can slow the final miles. If there is disruption on your travel day, we will contact you to agree an earlier pickup.

Why not the train?

There is no direct train from Tunbridge Wells to Dover. You would usually change at Tonbridge or Ashford, then take a taxi or walk from Dover Priory station to the terminal, which is a fair distance with luggage. A car from your door is much easier, especially for an early ferry. Three people sharing a saloon pay about £41 each.

Timing your arrival

Ferry companies close check-in for foot passengers well before sailing, and cruise lines give each passenger a boarding window. For a ferry, aim to arrive at least 45 minutes to an hour before departure, or as your operator advises. For a cruise, arrive at the start of your allocated check-in time. Summer weekends and school holiday departures at Dover are busy, so allow more time then.

Cruise luggage

Cruise passengers usually travel with two large cases each. For a couple, the estate (£141) is a safer choice than a saloon. Two couples sailing together fit comfortably in the people carrier or 8-seater. At the cruise terminal, porters take the bags from the car.

Coming back from Dover

Book the return with your ship or ferry details. The driver follows the arrival time and meets you at the passenger pickup area. Cruise disembarkation is usually early in the morning, and we are there when you come off.

About OTS Taxi

OTS Taxi is run by Onward Travel Solutions from 124 City Road, London EC1V 2NX. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and we run 24 hours a day. Call or WhatsApp 07575 470883. For other Kent routes to Dover, see Sevenoaks to Dover and Canterbury to Dover.

Ferries from Dover: who sails where

Most foot passengers we take to Dover from Tunbridge Wells are crossing to Calais with P&O Ferries or to Calais and Dunkirk with DFDS. Foot passenger rules differ between operators, and some sailings do not take foot passengers at all, so check before you book the crossing. Timetables and foot passenger details are on the P&O Ferries website and the DFDS website.

Eurotunnel at Folkestone

If you are travelling with a vehicle on Le Shuttle, the terminal is at Folkestone rather than Dover, and it carries vehicles only, not foot passengers. If you are meeting someone with a car there, or collecting a hire car on the other side, see our Eurotunnel Folkestone taxi page.

Cruise lines at Dover

Dover’s cruise terminals at the Western Docks handle ships from several lines through the spring, summer and autumn, with sailings to Norway, the Baltic and the Mediterranean. Embarkation times are set by the line; aim to arrive at the start of your boarding window. Cruise luggage usually needs the estate (£141) or a people carrier.

Holiday traffic and Operation Brock

At peak holiday times, especially the start of the summer school holidays and Easter, queues for the port can stretch back along the A20 and M20. When Operation Brock is in place, lorries are held on the M20 and the motorway runs with a contraflow, which slows everyone. On those days we leave earlier, and the fare stays the same.

Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Canterbury

Sevenoaks is £116 and Tonbridge £116 in a saloon. See also Sevenoaks to Dover port and Canterbury to Dover port. For Gatwick flights from Tunbridge Wells, see Tunbridge Wells to Gatwick, and for Heathrow, Heathrow to Tunbridge Wells.

Early sailings and overnight starts

For an early-morning ferry from Dover, pickups from Tunbridge Wells can be in the small hours. The roads are quiet, and the price is the same as during the day. Allow at least an hour at the port before your sailing for foot passenger check-in.

Coming back from France

For the return, give us the ferry operator and arrival time. The driver meets foot passengers at the terminal pickup area, follows any delays to the crossing, and takes you straight home. In summer, the M20 can be busy in the late afternoon; evening arrivals are usually quicker.

Families heading to France

For a family holiday with luggage, the estate (£141) or the people carrier (£167) gives you enough room. Child seats can be fitted before the driver arrives.

If your crossing is cancelled because of bad weather, call or WhatsApp us and we will move the pickup to your new sailing.
