A taxi from Stansted to Harwich International Port costs £116.80 in a saloon with Onward Travel Solutions. Up to three passengers with three large cases, paid to the driver on the day. Harwich to Stansted is priced on distance and comes out within a pound or so of the same fare.

Stansted is the closest London airport to Harwich, and the A120 runs almost the whole way between them. It’s about 50 miles and roughly an hour’s drive, which makes it the natural choice if you’re flying in to catch the Stena Line ferry to the Hook of Holland or a cruise calling at Harwich.

The Drive

From the airport the driver joins the A120 eastbound past Braintree, skirts Colchester and carries on along the A120 to Harwich. It’s about 50 miles and usually takes an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. The A120 is single carriageway in places, so a slow lorry can add a few minutes, but there’s no London traffic to worry about.

Taxi, Coach or Train?

There are public transport options, but none is quick. A coach and bus combination takes around 2 hours 20 minutes, and the train goes into London Liverpool Street and back out again via Manningtree, taking over 2 hours 30 minutes. A taxi gets you there in about half the time.

Harwich International Port

Harwich International Port is at Parkeston, just west of Harwich town on the Stour estuary. It’s the terminal for Stena Line’s ferries to the Hook of Holland and also handles cruise calls. Your driver drops you at the passenger terminal; if you’re sailing by ferry with a car you won’t need us, but foot passengers and cruise guests do. The railway station on site is Harwich International, not Harwich Town, which is useful to know if you’re comparing options.

Pickup at Stansted

Stansted has one terminal and your driver meets you in arrivals. We track the flight and you get one hour of free waiting from the time it lands.

Planning Your Day: Stansted to Harwich

With only about an hour on the road, Stansted gives you the most relaxed connection to Harwich of any London airport. Whether you’re catching the Stena Line ferry to the Hook of Holland, which runs both daytime and overnight crossings, or a cruise calling at Harwich, the plan starts from the latest check-in time on your ticket. A typical connection for an afternoon or evening sailing looks like this:

Time What happens
14:00 Flight lands at Stansted
14:00 to 14:40 Passport control if arriving from abroad, then baggage reclaim
14:40 Meet your driver in the arrivals hall
14:40 to 15:55 A120 east past Braintree and Colchester to Harwich
Around 15:55 Arrive at Harwich International Port

Even for an early-evening sailing that leaves time to spare. If you’re landing from outside the UK on a busy summer morning, allow extra time for passport queues, which at Stansted can be long.

Coming Back: Harwich to Stansted

Overnight ferries from the Hook of Holland arrive at Harwich early in the morning, and the run back to Stansted along the A120 is quick at that hour. That makes a late-morning flight from Stansted possible. Tell us your sailing and your flight time and we’ll suggest when to be collected. The return is priced on distance and comes out within a pound or so of the outbound fare.

Is the Taxi Worth It?

For one person travelling light, the coach-and-bus combination is cheaper but takes well over two hours. For couples, families and groups, the fixed taxi fare split between you becomes very competitive:

  • Three in a saloon: £38.93 each, about an hour door to door.
  • Four in an estate: £32.99 each.
  • Six in a people carrier: £25.84 each.
  • Eight in an 8-seater minivan: £25.78 each.

Ferry or Cruise: What to Tell Us

  • Flight number and landing time, for flight tracking.
  • Ferry or cruise, and the sailing time, so we can plan the margin.
  • People and luggage, including boxed bikes, golf bags or a folding wheelchair.
  • Any extra stops, added in the booking form so they’re in your quote.

Travelling With Children or Reduced Mobility

Child seats can be added when you book; give the ages so the right seats are fitted. For a folding wheelchair or walking aid, add a note and choose the estate or people carrier so it fits with the cases. Your driver will help with loading at both ends.

If Your Flight Is Delayed

Your pickup follows the real landing time and the first hour after landing is free. If a long delay puts your sailing at risk, call the OTS team and your ferry or cruise line straight away; ferry operators can often move foot passengers to a later crossing.

Arriving at Stansted

Stansted has a single terminal, so there’s only one arrivals hall to find. Once you have your bags, call your driver on the number in your confirmation and they’ll come to you. Add a note if you’d like a name board.

Why Book With Onward Travel Solutions?

A fixed fare agreed in advance, flight tracking with an hour’s free waiting, a driver who meets you in arrivals and nothing paid online. For a ferry or cruise with a fixed departure, it’s the simplest way to get from the plane to the port.

Waiting at Harwich for Your Return

When you come back through Harwich, your driver will be waiting at the passenger terminal as foot passengers come off the ship. If the crossing is delayed or disembarkation takes longer than usual, we keep track and wait, so there’s no scramble for a local taxi at the rank. Tell us if you need a stop on the way back to Stansted, for example to drop someone in Colchester or Braintree, and we’ll add it to the booking.

Groups and Business Travel

Harwich is also busy with business and freight-related travel between the UK and the Netherlands. If you’re booking for a team, a people carrier or minibus keeps everyone together, and the fixed fare makes expenses easy: the price is agreed in writing before you travel.

For an early return, give us your hotel address as the pickup and we’ll price it in the same way.

Paying and Changing Your Booking

Nothing is paid online. The fare is fixed when you book and you pay the driver on the day. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup through Manage My Booking; inside 24 hours, call the OTS team. Child seats and extra stops can be added in the booking form.
