A long-distance taxi in the UK costs roughly £1.50 to £2.50 per mile in a saloon, and the rate per mile falls the further you go. With us, a fixed fare from central London is £213 to Birmingham, £319 to Manchester and £580 to Edinburgh. You pay per vehicle, not per passenger, so three people sharing a saloon to Manchester pay about £106 each.

What makes up a long-distance taxi fare
- Distance. The biggest factor. Short trips carry a fixed starting cost, which is why Brighton works out at about £2.50 a mile and Edinburgh about £1.43.
- Vehicle size. A people carrier costs roughly a third more than a saloon; an 8-seater a little under double.
- Airports and ports. Journeys to or from an airport include an airport fee line for the drop-off or parking charge.
- Return trips. Book both legs together and you fix both prices at once.
What does not change the fare: traffic, roadworks, the time of day, or a driver taking a longer route to avoid a jam. A fixed fare is fixed.
Taxi or train for a long journey?
For one person travelling light between two city centres, the train is usually cheaper, especially booked in advance. A long-distance taxi makes more sense when:
- you are three or more people and the fare split beats three or four walk-up train tickets;
- you have heavy luggage or children’s equipment;
- you are going door to door, for example a village or a hotel far from a station;
- you are travelling at night or on a Sunday when trains are slow or replaced by buses;
- you need to connect to a flight or cruise at a fixed time.
Example: London to Manchester for four people
Four people with luggage need more than a saloon. A people carrier costs £420 for the whole group, which is £105 each, door to door, with no changes and no carrying cases across stations. Compare that with four walk-up train fares plus taxis at each end before you decide.
Comfort on a long trip
On journeys over two hours, ask for a short break when you book and the driver will plan a services stop. Executive cars and people carriers give more legroom. If you need anything specific for the journey, add it to the booking notes.
