6 people People carrier £87 £14.50

How it compares with the train

Southern runs direct trains from Gatwick to Worthing, and the fastest take about 48 minutes. For one or two people with light bags, that is good value.

The car wins when you are a family with holiday luggage, when your home is out in Findon or Goring rather than near the station, or when you land late in the evening. It also avoids the walk from Worthing station with cases.

Meeting your driver

Your driver waits for you inside the arrivals hall at the North or South Terminal, holding a name board. We follow your flight number, and you have one hour of free waiting after the flight lands. Our flight delays and waiting time page explains what happens if the delay runs longer.

You can check your flight and terminal on Gatwick’s official flight information page.

North or South Terminal

Many of the holiday airlines flying to the Mediterranean and the Canaries use the South Terminal, including British Airways, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Jet2. easyJet flies from both terminals, and Emirates and Qatar Airways from the North. The fare to Worthing is the same from either, and the free shuttle between terminals takes about two minutes.

The drive south

The usual route is the M23 and A23 towards Brighton, then west along the A27 to Worthing, or across country through Horsham on the A24. The A27 around Shoreham and Lancing can be slow on summer weekends. The fare stays the same.

Going back to Gatwick

The outbound trip is the same £65 in a saloon. Your driver waits 10 minutes free at your door. For a summer Saturday flight, allow extra time on the A27 and A23.

Holiday luggage

Families flying back from a fortnight away often have more bags than they left with. A saloon takes three suitcases; four cases need the estate, and five need the people carrier. If you are bringing back a pushchair, car seats or a surfboard, mention it in the booking notes.
