Why the train takes so long
Gatwick and Sevenoaks are on different rail lines that only meet in London. The usual rail route is a train north to London Bridge and another back out to Sevenoaks, about 1 hour 20 minutes in all, for a place that is roughly 23 miles away by road.
That makes this one of the routes where a car saves the most time, especially with luggage or after a late landing.

Arriving at the North or South Terminal
The fare is the same from both terminals. British Airways, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Jet2 use the South Terminal; Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Swiss the North Terminal; easyJet both. The free inter-terminal shuttle runs around the clock and takes about two minutes.
The road to Sevenoaks
The drive goes east along the M23 and the M25 to junction 5, then down into Sevenoaks. The M25 between the M23 and junction 5 is usually the steady part of the trip, and the fixed fare covers you if it is not.
Going back to Gatwick
The outbound trip costs the same. Your driver waits 10 minutes free at the door. For flights before 8am, a car saves you a very early train into London and another back out again.
