The train is direct, so when does a taxi make sense?
Great Western Railway runs direct trains from Gatwick to Guildford on the Reading line, generally twice an hour in the daytime. For one person travelling light to somewhere near Guildford station, that is the economical choice.
A car is the better option in three situations:
- You are not going to the station. Guildford’s town centre is hilly, and the villages around it, from Shalford to Merrow, are a further trip from the station. One car from the terminal saves the second leg.
- You are arriving with a lot of luggage. If you are starting a term at the University of Surrey, a year’s worth of bags fits easily in the estate (£84, 4 suitcases) or, for two students sharing, the people carrier (£98, 5 suitcases).
- You land outside the timetable. Trains thin out late in the evening. Our fixed fare does not change.
Students arriving for the start of term
If you are booking for a student, a few details make the arrival smoother:
- Give the hall of residence or the exact address, plus any instructions about which entrance to use.
- Put the student’s mobile number in the booking so the driver can reach them on landing.
- Add the number of suitcases accurately. Most problems at the kerb come from a car that is too small.
Meeting your driver
Your driver waits for you inside the arrivals hall at the North or South Terminal, holding a name board. We follow your flight number, and you have one hour of free waiting after the flight lands. Our flight delays and waiting time page explains what happens if the delay runs longer.
You can check your flight and terminal on Gatwick’s official flight information page.
Which terminal?
Gatwick’s two terminals are linked by a free shuttle that runs every few minutes, 24 hours a day. British Airways, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Jet2 use the South Terminal. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Swiss use the North Terminal, and easyJet uses both. Check your booking and tell us the terminal, so your driver is waiting in the right arrivals hall.
The road from Gatwick to Guildford
The usual route runs west along the A25 through Reigate and Dorking, or round the M25 and down the A3, depending on traffic. Either way it is a cross-country drive rather than a motorway sprint, and the fixed fare means a slow day does not cost you more.
Flying out from Guildford
When you go back to Gatwick, your driver waits 10 minutes free at the pickup. For an early flight, book a pickup that allows for the A25 through Dorking being slower than it looks on a map. Our Guildford to Gatwick taxi page covers departure timing.
